This sentence shows a faulty default assumption, in the way it’s worded, or perhaps that’s just going along:

Scientists working on the site have sequenced the DNA for several of the individuals—that’s how they figured out that two of the crania were female.

I read it as the DNA sequencing results lacked any paternal haploids, which would indicate the skulls were female.
