Here are the potential charges, and the penalties for same.

It’s a maximum sentence of life in prison for attempting to blow up an airliner, not just 20 years.

It is easier for a prosecutor to show the attempt to blow up the airliner than trying to prove 250 counts of attempted murder.

And that doesn’t count lesser included charges…
