Any conscientious policeman is going to find out not only that Gates is who he says he is, and that he lives where he says he does, but that Gates is not saying whatever he’s saying because, say, some home invader is holding his family hostage in the back room.

For an officer to do any less would be a dereliction—but to do so, he would have to ask questions which Gates apparently decided were intrusive. This is the disconnect between someone carefully performing his job and dealing with ugly possibilities that he must consider, but which Gates—a pampered middle-class idiot with an investment in feeling outraged—did not consider. Gates therefore responded without considering that the questions being asked were in fact for his own protection, even if seemingly intrusive, instead filtering them through his grievance-laden view of the world.

Yes, the officer was “investigating whether or not a home invader was holding his family hostage in the back room.” Bwahahahahahahahaha. Because the first thing you do when the police arrive and your family has been kidnapped is being questioning why the police officer is in your house.

The cop showed up because of a 911 caller who said to the dispatcher that it very well could be someone who locked themselves out of the house. After verifying that Gates was indeed the homeowner, Gates began to mouth off to the officer. At this point he simply could have given Gates his badge number and left with no problem. Instead he refused to give his badge number, and told Gates to come outside, while being yelled at by Gates. He then arrested Gates once he stepped outside because he was “disorderly.” Explain again how this was simply his police duty?
