re: #59 Targetpractice

I tend to think of Bush Sr. as the last of the pragmatic Republicans. Norquist still likes to claim his pelt as his first big “victory” and that’s why I hate the slimy bastard more than anything else. Man made a judgment call that his predecessor made numerous times, raising taxes to address the deficit, and he ended up vilified for it while Ronnie goes down in history as “one of the greats.”

And ever since then, GOP fiscal policy has been very clear —- if they get into power, they spend like drunken sailors on their own priorities (e.g., tax cuts and wars), to line their own pockets and to deliberately increase the federal debt.

If the Democrats get into power, the GOP re-discovers its ‘concern’ for fiscal policy as a tool for obstructing anything and everything the Democrats try to do, and to use as leverage to gut long-standing programs such as social security and medicare.
