The trip is two weeks. Non-clothing stuff I am bringing might include a DSLR, a MacBook, a cellphone, chargers, an umbrella (collapsible, small, used in Japan before), a jacket and maybe some small handmade gifts if I can find the time to make them, two medication syringes that are non-negligible in size and my glucose meter and supplies. Since it’s Japan, I’m skipping pretty much all the toiletries except for hair gel and a comb.

The more I think about it, the more I’m thinking that the 21 inch suitcase is what I should get.

I always preferred a backpack, largish but not seriously large, for travel in Asia. OTOH, I was only 38 when last there in 2002 for the adoption. Have you considered a iPad instead of a full size computer?
