My mom was a widow so we could not afford to join the White Flight to the suburbs, I stayed and grew up with the blacks and Latinos and all the people the white working class learned to despise and found out that they were decent neighbors just like anyone else.
I recall the hype over Hillbilly Elegy, but one aspect of it seemed accurate: the Appalachian whites who showed up in the 60’s were an ethnic group unto their own, white but not quite like the Central/Eastern European-immigrant whites or the WASP whites in our neighborhood
