When people bitch about Hiroshima and Nagasaki, I always ask them why do they hate the Japanese so much? If you look at Okinawa as a predictor, we’d have had to kill off the majority of the Japanese in order to take the home islands. We’d have lost a lot of people doing it, but that would have just made us more merciless in grinding them down into dust.

Objectively, Hiroshima and Nagasaki saved a lot of American lives, and that is good enough for me. But they also saved a lot of Japanese lives.

Also, the part conviently ignored by most people today is that both cities were key military targets in their own right. The like to say the US bombed the cities as civilian targets. Hiroshima was where the entire Southern Defense HQ was based and Nagasaki was the key rail mobilization and munitions manufacturing center for the region. They were prime military targets which would have needed to have been taken out anyway you looked at it if an invasion had been necessary.
