I think I’m fighting a losing battle when I travel because trying to find something healthy to eat or drink at a gas station is like trying to find a sane person in the Republican party.

I don’t drink soft drinks, primarily because the carbonation and my tongue do not agree (also the same reason I don’t drink beer). That right there eliminates about 75% of gas station beverages, the remainder are made up of sports drinks, bottled water, flavored/mineral water, milk and fruit juices.

But even the fruit juices are mostly HFCS laden crap and the companies will go to great lengths to try and disguise that fact. A couple of weeks ago I grabbed this off a shelf:

Now I admit I did only glance at the label, but I bought it believing it was 100% juice, it’s not. It’s only a 30% juice blend.

I was at another gas station a few minutes ago. The entire back wall was a large cooler section with six separate compartments, one of which was mostly fruit juice and milk. Of the one that was fruit juice and milk there were dozens of fruit “beverages” but only five, count’ em FIVE that were actually 100% juice.

I do NOT like high fructose corn syrup. I don’t like the way it tastes compared to real sugar, I don’t like the aftertaste that gets left in my mouth and I don’t like the fact that it does nothing to quench my thirst. I rarely if ever feel truly refreshed after drinking HFCS filled crap and that even includes sports drinks like Powerade.

It’s a truly sad statement on our eating habits when it is so ridiculously hard to find something healthy.
