Saying it’s because of immigration is completely made up.

It’s a continuation of the “Invasion of brown foreigners!” motif. In times past, it would have been screaming fits about foreigners shacking up with “our women.” Now it’s the unspoken worry that foreigners are gonna breed us out of existence. In other words, it’s the American flavor of far-right European scaremongering.
