re: #73 Shiplord Kirel, Friend of Moose and Squirrel

Scored another long-sought model kit, though this one does not quite rise to Holy Grail status.

1963 Airfix 1/72 scale Hawker P.1127 (prototype of the Harrier series). There are zillions of Harrier models out there, but only Airfix produced one of the P.1127.

This was $17.50 on Ebay, which is a good price. Another seller wanted $62.50 for one (eeek!) but it was signed by Roy Cross, the artist who produced the dramatic Airfix box art of the 50s and 60s.

Oh, cool. I never saw a kit in a bag like that. Then, the ones I built when young were Monogram and Revell WWII aircraft mostly. Though I also did the Monogram B-29, my favorites were the B-17G & P-61C all in 1/48th scale. My father then helped me hang them from string over the stairs up to the bedrooms upstairs so through out my childhood I looked up at them “flying” morning and night.

It was a foul day for me when my marginal (not fully color blind, and at other times within regs but not in 1981) color vision kept me out of the WO Flight program. I ended up in tanks, infantry and MI over the next 16 years though and I can’t say I didn’t have fun on the way ;)
