What about contact lenses? Did they provide any protection against infection?

Neither study addressed contact lenses. Both studies addressed the fact people who wear glasses touch their eyes less, which seems to be the reason they have lower incidence of the disease (partly because they get in the way of touching, partly because they help keep things from blowing into your eyes, &c). I presume (but don’t know) that people who wear contacts probably touch their eyes about the same amount as people without glasses.

Who’d’ve thought that evolution would select through disease the blind to take over the earth? /s
