As for English food, I think the great explorers like Drake, Hawkins, etc. fanned out across the globe and started the British empire mostly because they were looking for something decent to eat.
British food in recent years has improved considerably, especially the selection in the supermarkets: most any kind of Indians/Asian/Oriental foods can be found there, conveniently portioned and packeaged.
