Though the hearing is called a “Stand Your Ground Hearing”, that is because the SYG law provides for it. SYG still would not apply if Zimmerman’s claims are correct (Note: I am not saying that they are, I’m just explaining the situation). If Zimmerman was in fact pinned on the ground by Martin, then he would have the legal right to use force to stop Martin’s assault in any state in the Union. If escape from an assailant is impossible, then it is lawful to use deadly force to stop the assault.
What matters is how Zimmerman ended up on the ground. If he stalked Martin then initiated the physical confrontation and assault the fact he started to lose in no way justifies the application of lethal force.
