Also, the part conviently ignored by most people today is that both cities were key military targets in their own right. The like to say the US bombed the cities as civilian targets. Hiroshima was where the entire Southern Defense HQ was based and Nagasaki was the key rail mobilization and munitions manufacturing center for the region. They were prime military targets which would have needed to have been taken out anyway you looked at it if an invasion had been necessary.

Should the nucs not been available, LeMay would have done it the way they did Tokyo. The tolls arguably would have been higher.
