The Merchant Marine has proved its valour and patriotism over and over again. There is no shame in serving in the Merchant Marine versus the Navy; one might argue that it takes more courage to serve on a merchant vessel, since those ships are either lightly armed or unarmed.

Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, and Cisco Houston served in WWII, and made the Murmansk Run.

The Merchant Marine also has its own service academy, on Long Island. We used to use it for commercial photo shoot locations.
