They have to look at the bigger picture: by expelling Moore, they could present the image of still having some shreds of moral decency, and in two years, their base will vote for for the Republican senate appointee nonetheless.

That’s a good point; if the Alabama base will vote for Moore, they’ll pretty much vote for anyone.

The proposed change in the law wouldn’t come into effect until after the turn of the year, so timing would be crucial; they need to keep Moore on just long enough, say until mid-January or so, then give him the boot. Governor Ivey could then appoint someone to fill the seat until 2020.

I do wonder how Moore’s supporters would react. Personally, I think they’d be livid, but then again, it’s enough time between early next year and November 2020 for tempers to cool.
