If I still lived in the Southwest, I would own a gun, a pistol loaded with snake shot (basically shotgun shells for a pistol) just for the event that I encountered a fellow like that on a hike. You don’t have to aim very closely and the scattered shot generally does not do more than scare them away.

I’ve stepped over quite a few rattlesnakes. I’m not carrying a gun for that. People who may be trying to harm me in the desert? That’s much more likely. I’ve actually been shot at while camping near Area 51. We scrambled the babies and dogs into the vehicle and left the trailers to spend the night at the Little A-Le-Inn(sp?) in Rachel.
