re: #73 Dangerman (misuser of the sarc tag)

mcconnell et al outfoxed themselves in a more fundamental way

this will go down as the biggest Pyrrhic victory since the actual Pyrrhic War

this is about a month old and it’s spot on:

Melber suggested Trump and McConnell may actually end up tainting their public claim to an acquittal of the president by rigging the process in Trump’s favor. Tribe agreed.

I think that analysis is pretty much correct: one thing that has impressed me throughout the whole 2019-20 impeachment saga is how the Democrats have - outside the mendacious RW media bubble, of course - pretty much seized and set the narrative from the beginning. And they have done so by simply following the basic “rules” and procedures (GOP caterwauling notwithstanding) - and making a clear and coherent case to the rest of the country outside the Circle Of Delusion. Not so much the “legal” case (though they have done a good job laying that out even without the full information available): but the “political”/PR one: i.e. that Donald Trump is dishonest, that Donald Trump is crooked*, and has trampled on the law, relying on an equally dishonest Executive Branch to corruptly cover up for him, and when finally called out (impeached) relying on an equally corrupt GOP Senate to “acquit” him in a rigged and blatantly partisan “trial” without even the pretense of fairness (sworn oaths aside).
Not a good storyline….

*also unfit and incompetent, but that’s another story.
