MS went from referring to Window releases by the build numbers at Win 95 (for consumer variants) and Win2000 (for NT releases) in favor of more consumer-friendly names and are sort of returning to the practice with Win7 (Windows 6.1; 6+1+7). Quoth the Wikipedia:
