The thing is, on one level I can agree with a few of the things Rick says here. There’s nothing wrong with suggesting that people could be more responsible, more humble, exercise more self-control, that Hollywood could offer us more positive role models. I am not a fan of moral relativism, there ARE things that are just wrong, and so on. But the way Rick presents it, it is not just a matter of conflicting opinions that are hashed out in the messy give and take of democracy, it is spiritual warfare that brooks no compromise. It is a dangerous and destructive attitude.

What you think people were more humble and had better self-control back when the KKK was popular, Jim Crow laws, and during the time of slavery? This idea that this is some kind of new phenomenon is like the 50s stereotypes revolving around “Father Knows Best.” If we could get a time machine and plant ourself in say, the Bowery during the days of Tammany Hall. Then compare how Americans were “back in the good old days” to today. People are downright civilized compared to the mythical days of old.
