My point is the whole religious right/ Tea Party pawns are very immobile (as far as their beliefs and votes), and that immobility shapes the political landscape in the US, within which the wheelers and dealers will cut their deals.
The Kristol thing about letting the Bush tax cuts expire on the wealthiest is like a minor gambit in chess - something with minor downside risks but more meaningful upside payoffs.
