Viet vet explained to me that after he was forced to shoot a child who turned out to be a bomb delivery system, and after he found the fellow soldier (that had been screaming all night) dead, skinned alive, and mutilated,… why he, as a 17 year old kid, had no trouble at all dehumanizing the enemy and killing them quite happily. He did not use those words, and he said more, and I think he mourns the loss of his sanity.
