The right needs to be made to own Trump. They cannot get away with saying that Trump was an aberration and not representative of what their party and ideology is. The fact of the matter is large majorities of GOP voters even those voting for Trump’s opponents agreed with a lot of his extreme statements and beliefs. And what’s more is those opponents had a lot themselves. What makes Trump unique is that he says a lot of things that more seasoned GOP politicians can be more subtle about. Ted Cruz’s immigration and foreign policy is really not too different from Trump’s but Cruz has experience in being able to be more subtle about that rather than proclaiming that he’d encourage torture and force Mexico to pay for a wall.
