Why aren’t guns treated like cars? Cars have titles and transfer of ownership is tracked. Cars require insurance. Cars require licenses and testing for operation. The same should go for guns.

And cars used to be treated (until the Thirties) as an absolute right to own; the auto club was the NRA of its day, striking down law after law in the courts and with politicians under the rubric of “the right to travel.”

As the carnage of unregistered cars and unlicensed drivers continued to mount, cars went from an absolute right to one of the most highly regulated things in society.

One can hope that the arc of legislation will bend the way cars did with guns, but we’ll have to see. If a GOP congressman getting shot wasn’t enough for even that congressman (Steve Scalise) to have a change of mind, I’m not sure what will.
