Speaking in non-clinical terms (I’ve never met her) but I’d hazard a guess that her delusions may have been brought about as the result of childhood or early adolescence sexual trauma or abuse.

Instead of seeking out professional help, she probably relied on self-help books or groups, or perhaps turned to ever-increasingly radical faith to help her cope.
