By “final design” I didn’t mean the diesel-electric Shortfin Barracuda. I meant the nuclear powered Barracuda. The Australians rejected it because they didn’t want a nuclear powered boat.

So now they’re buying nuclear powered boats.

The claim is that they didn’t want the Barracuda because the French reactors need a mid-life refuel/refurbish unlike the US/UK HEU based reactors, but with even worse CO2 emissions per capita than Saudi Arabia I think Australia needs to seriously think about investing in the nuclear power expertise that would have let them refuel the Barracudas.

That’s news to me, my understanding was that the decision was totally political because of worry that they’d piss of China, who was and still remains one of their largest trade partners.
