The extraordinary ignorance some of these folks claim about the history of racially-charged language in the United States is just amazing.

Just speaking as a foreigner: It’s hard to learn about this if you don’t actively seek it out. None of my dictionaries (English or English-German) mentions the racial connotation of the word.
