What’s the supposed reasoning behind that? “Gee, if voters don’t think this small minority group should have protections, that clearly indicates that there really is no need to protect that group”? Conversely, if a majority thinks a group should have protections, is that somehow supposed to indicate a broad need to protect them? I guess we should get used to discrimination against straight white Christians becoming the only thing covered by civil rights laws.

I’ve mentioned my interpretation of Christie’s mindset before. He wants to run for POTUS, but as a Republican, he can’t be seen as being pro gay rights. So his best option is to throw out to the public.

If the public says okay, then he gets to say “Sorry, GOP, the voters have spoken. I did what I could.”

If the public says no, then he comes off as a conservative hero, beating back the blasphemous gay horde.

I’d be willing to bet good money this is what Romney is basing his proposal on.
