re: #67 wheat-dogghazi

What’s broke about it?

“It” being our institutions of governance, I’d say there is quite a bit.

As for the executive office, other than some over reach of powers (which would likely take clarifications of the Constitution to fix), I think most of inadequacies surrounding the institution are in just making it more efficient. And, not having a Regent or aristocracy we’ve turned the Institution of the Presidency into the replacement ceremonial head office - one reason I wish to abandon the current WH as the Office and move the President into a office-like Office is to remove the air of landed gentry/Baron from the the whole scene.

The real problem is Congress, namely, that it is becoming less “representative”. The numbers of Representatives has not increased even though population has, and now each Congressman has a district so large there is no way he/she can really be in touch with all that goes on in the district. Plus some Americans, such as those who live in DC, are still being taxed without full representation, in contradiction to our own proclaimed beliefs, and this can be extended to our “territories” and their powerless tokens in Congress.

The Senate is obsolete and anti-democratic.

The Judicial branch likewise hasn’t expanded the USSC, though the case loads are much larger and as administrators of the Federal system the Supremes have to manage the growing system. If we weren’t so inclined to try and imprison such a large share of our population perhaps the Federal courts wouldn’t be so overwhelmed, but Americans it appears do like to send people off to prison.

Nostalgia and sentimentalism are chains.
