Republican trend setters like Nugent, LImbaugh, Hannity, Barton etc. obviously do not believe many of the standard claims they try to brainwash the rubes to believe. This is obvious since they have to be fairly smart themselves, though utterly depraved, to do what they do.

They may be smarter than many of their rubes, I’ll give you that. And someone like Limbaugh probably even above average intelligence. But there have to be some standards. Calling Hannity smart robs the word of all meaning, dammit!

Even the somewhat smart ones like Bannon aren’t exactly evil masterminds. That academic shtick only works on his right wing fanboys. Or even Hitler, who had some smarts and pulled off an astonishing rise to power: When I first read bits of Mein Kampf, what struck me most was how irrational and underwhelming it is.

I think part of the problem may be that our culture tends to associate success, particularly economic success, with being smart by default. But white male right wingers really don’t have to be geniuses to make it in their lives, especially in media.
