Shiplord Kirel: From behind wingnut lines11/27/2020 6:23:54 pm PST

re: #72 Shiplord Kirel: Fan of USPS, Goodyear, and Oreo

As the article says, “one of the most historic aircraft in existence.” It is not well known that the Dauntless also saw combat with the French Navy in Indochina after the war though they were soon phased out in favor of Curtiss Helldivers.

Speaking of which: Aeronavale Helldivers of Flotille 9.F take off from the French carrier Arromanches for a strike at Dien Bien Phu, Vietnam, April 1954. Unfortunately I do not know who the artist is.

I’ve been acutely aware; sometimes in the background, sometimes not; that the glory and spectacle of military aviation has always been deeply intertwined with tragedy, horror, and folly. In that respect it is a metaphor for the modern age. May it pass from the world even as we remember the sacrifices and honor those who made them.
