Yes, women here do have legal and financal recourse, but I think more than enough husbands would have a healthy fear of other retribution.

Legal and financial recourse, and also, education, a sense of themselves as people…if a woman is married very young, has no education, how is she going to even conceptualize that this is not OK, let alone fight back?

And unfortunately, the women in the husband’s family often side with their sons, so no help to be had from your MIL.

These women are more like kidnap victims in some ways than what I think of as a wife.
