The thing that scares me is that chaos and disorder would tend to favor DT: the more riots, terrorist attacks or confrontations between citizens and police that we hear about in the news, the more opportunities he has to present his point of view to a receptive audience.

I dunno. These have been isolated incidents involving individual perps, which is sadly not that unusual in the USA now. What would really tip the odds in Trump’s favor would be a terror attack killing hundreds of people, or a full-scale riot in a major city. Of course, Trump could still take a minor incident and exaggerate it to something the size of the Apocalypse.
