A couple years ago when Alabama passed its version of Arizonaās āpapers pleaseā law, tomato farmers wound up plowing under their crops, because even offering $50 an hour they could not get people into the fields to pick tomatoes.
It turns out if you have a regular job somewhere, youāre not going to quit it for a three-week season in the fields, even at $50. Migrant farm workers are migrants precisely because they travel across the country for different harvest seasons. You canāt have an office job or something and also be a farm worker. Capitalism doesnāt work that way.
