The Fallujah insurgents were Sunnis, if I recall…loyal to Saddam’s regime. It was a major fuckup on the part of the “contractors” getting off course and driving through town, but that doesn’t excuse the ensuing bloodbath. It was a tragedy, period.
I recall differently, but we could both be right. At that point the two Sunni factions were working together, a situation that continued until 2007 when Al Qaeda’s brutal excesses, coupled with desire to earn a say in the government, caused the ex-Baathists to turn on Al Qaeda in the Anbar Awakening.
