JFK did roughly the same for his service. Was rejected from Army for health reasons, specifically back issues (he was a very frail man.)

But he used his family’s connections to pull the strings. He got into the Navy instead.

Instead using his family’s connections to keep him out of the war (ala GWB.), he used them to get into the war.

His older brother died in a pretty ballsy way. Love the Kennedy family.

He got into the Navy despite his daddy’s wishes. Remember, Joe Sr. was planning a family dynasty at the time. He tried like mad to keep his boys out of the service and, when that failed, tried to get them into roles that would keep them away from the fighting.
