That probably has less to do with the nutters gnashing their teeth and the threat posed to the general election, and more to do with the nutters taking the elected officials out in the primary and fact that an increasing number of elected officials are actually nutters themselves.

What we’re seeing is natural selection in action. The rising anger and fear in the wingnut ranks over what they saw as the end of white privilege resulted in a pressure-cooker environment in the party where you can’t stick to the old code words and dog whistles. But the problem the GOP faces now is the same as bringing a deep-sea fish to shallow water: The fish evolved to cope with all that pressure by relying upon it for structure, the absence of which causes it to collapse into a mush. Like the election of Obama convinced them that the glory days were over, the election of Trump convinced them that white privilege was ascendant once again. So the party that evolved to deal with Obama by stymieing his every move now has no damned clue what to do without him around.
