I’m pretty sure this is going to kill Equifax.

What I want to know is what recourse do we have for these companies that have all our personal data when we don’t give them permission you even have it (!) when they are irresponsible with that personal data and shit like this happens. Why are they even allowed to have this much information?

Ostensibly to enable lenders to judge how good a credit risk you are. None of the information (birthdays, CC numbers, account numbers) is redacted, though. I’ve seen the printed reports lenders get from the bureaus. There’s enough there for anyone to steal your identity and your money if that info is available.

I don’t understand why the account numbers can’t be redacted, and why it’s necessary to have a seven- or ten-year record of all the places you’ve lived.
