Immigrating legally requires a lot of paperwork, traveling and money. I’ve spent over $10 000 all told and I still have to cough up another $1200 to get my citizenship. It also takes time. I first applied in 2006 and did not complete the process and get my visa until April 2008. It’s not like you can decide to come here legally and just waltz across the border two weeks later.

Going through the whole process was challenging enough to do in a free country with well enforced laws. In a poverty stricken area where I’d have to worry all the time about drug deals and mercenaries trying to blow my head off? Not a damn chance.

I’d run like hell, just like these people are doing.

There is NOTHING illegal about asylum. Hell, the things these people are trying to escape are why we have asylum laws in the first place.

I used to be naive and just thought “They should emigrate legally.” And while I still wish people would, I know that it’s not that simple and I know it’s definitely not that simple if you’re fleeing what a lot of these people are fleeing in Central America.
