Many years ago I read Eric Alterman while he had a blog. One of his bete noires was Andrew Sullivan, who also went to a very dark place after the 9/11 attacks. But then I noticed that Sullivan had changed his tune when he realized the disaster that the Iraq invasion had become. I started reading him at that time and then exchanged some comments with Alterman, suggesting that Sullivan had repented. Alterman assured me that Sullivan was beyond redemption. At that time and for several years afterwards, I thought Alterman was too harsh and unforgiving. It was only after Sullivan abandoned his blog that I really discovered how right Alterman was and how vile Sullivan has always been..

People can truly repent from mistakes they made.
