The last widow receiving a Confederate soldier’s pension died near here a few years ago. (There were several claims to that status.)
What happened was Confederate veterans were awarded pensions in, I’m not sure, about 1914 or so, then there were a whole bunch of bogus weddings of 80-year-old men to young women who wanted that pension, figuring the old guy would die soon and then she’d be set for life.
How much was it, like $25 a month?
