Really, just at first blush, I’m not sure what ABC was thinking with buying into a pilot episode. Just what demographic were they hoping to appeal to with this?

My guess is that they wanted to try and “humanize” Muslims for people by showing an American teenager thrust into the Middle East and having to adapt. But the premise they’ve gone with is so stereotypical (being a virtual prisoner at a Saudi compound, horrible tragedy that leaves her stranded, etc.) that it’s going to be offensive just because it’s trying too hard to be clever.

Simpler is always better. Taking a show that would normally center on a middle to upper-middle class white girl and changing that girl and her family to Muslims isn’t that hard.
