I know it’s a joke but AR-15’s aren’t limited to .223 / 5.56mm anymore. There are readily available barrels chambered in a variety of calibers, including 7.62 x 39 mm, .300 Blackout, 6.5 Grendel, .50 Beowulf, 9mm, .45 ACP, .22 LR and .22 Nosler. Complete uppers receiver assemblies can be changed in less than a minute.

It’s that versatility that is both part of the appeal and part of their criminal versatility. Because upper receiver assemblies and all the other AR parts don’t require a background check and can be purchased with cash a person can finish a gun up with an 80% lower or 3D print a completed lower and then assemble a finished gun without encountering any regulatory hurdles whatsoever.

A 7.62x39mm AR-15 is essentially an American AK-47. Woof.
