The comparison is there were a bunch of establishment candidates who kept attacking each other to become the mainstream candidate while Trump sailed through and won the nomination. Same thing is happening this year.

Trump was able to sell himself as the ultimate outsider, the anti-politician and the protest vote for all those tired of politicians and politics as usual.

Bernie is an outsider to the Democratic Party, but he is a career politician.

I think he has a solid base of support but there are also a lot of people in the USA and abroad who are simply pulling the Machiavellian trick of supporting the opposition nominee they perceive as the least likely to defeat Trump.
