I think US forces began the OIF at night too (Early Dawn)

Just prior to twilight dates back hundreds of years… why armies stand to just before dawn (much to the chagrin of privates everywhere).

Doing it right after it becomes pitch black requires intensive training and some really fancy equipment. For example, the Germans in WW2 (plenty experienced and well trained) were loath to fight at night.
