We used to have an excellent ersatz Thanksgiving Day here in Germany, Bu- und Bettag, the Day of Prayer and Atonement, which always fell on the third Wednesday in November. Close enough and convenient enough for us expats.

Alas, the holiday was abolished after reunification. Now we have to pray and atone on our own time and celebrate Thanksgiving at the weekend.
