I understand— and given my exposure to science, I have seen how data can be manipulated. My first thought is the fight between Rachel Carson and the folks at Dow over DDT— and as I understand it, there is still no clear consensus on that issue.

I’m not up to speed on that, so I can’t say. Another complicating issue is that there are (of course) so many areas of science where there are competing views and hypotheses and there isn’t yet a complete consensus. So in addition to experts who aren’t experts and are acting in bad faith, sometimes there is a legitimate scientific dispute at play when two trial experts offer conflicting opinions. (My understanding is that this can be what’s going on when a trial judge decides to exclude all expert testimony on some scientific subject in a (criminal) trial )
