They never consider that it might one day be them, or someone they care about who ‘looks good for’ a crime. I’ve mentioned it before, but a wingnut once told me that even if some Death Row inmates didn’t commit the murders they were there for, they probably deserved to die anyway because the police wouldn’t have arrested them if they weren’t guilty of SOMETHING.

I really didn’t have anything to say to that. It’s Blackstone’s formulation turned on its head.

Several years ago a columnist in Toronto’s wing nut paper, The Sun, proposed that public floggings would be a good way to deal with crime.

I wrote them a letter saying that should such a thing occur I would plant a half kilo of heroin in the author’s house and inform the police of its presence.

For some reason they didn’t print that one.
