Fire was a big concern as well. But as a general rule it wont sink you. And yeah tanks have a bad history with fire. Wasn’t the Sherman derisively called the “Ronson Lighter” because it caught fire so easily?

Irony - despite it’s reputation, when you go back and look at the numbers, they were less likely to burn than many other tanks and even if they did, less likely to go boom.

That’s cold comfort though - all tanks burn easy.

Back in the Yom Kippur War the Israeli army learned the hard way that the hydraulic fluid used by the US in the M-48 & M-60 tanks was extremely flammable. The current stuff is better but a penetrating hit will almost certainly spread a flammable mist into the air…
