I am thinking at this point the only possible thing the GOP can use to hurt Obama as far as the general election is concerned is gas prices.

If prices go up through the summer (likely) and CONTINUE to go up through the fall, the GOP could run a PR campaign blaming Obama over and over and over for high gas prices and telling voters that voting Republican will lower them.

Since Big Oil is friendly to the GOP, they could also conspire to help drive gas prices up and turn up public frustration against Obama.

Of course, there’s a good chance this WON’T happen, but we are fools if we honestly believe Mitt Romney has ZERO chance of being elected in November. It’s not quite THAT open and shut yet.

I’d be more worried about the economic effects of high gas prices than the prices themselves. Especially in light of oil production and consumption being at highs and lows not seen in decades. And the overall reality that America’s oil production does not constitute enough of a percentage of the world’s overall production to drive prices up or down. We simply don’t pump out enough crude in a year to make even OPEC break a sweat.
